A trip to your local DMV is vital.  You need to be aware of all the rules and regulations in your home state.  Another consideration is to be sure you will be able to be insured.

There are several benefits to building your own kit car.  For instance, when you were growing up were you the type kid who as soon as you got a new toy the first thing you did would be tear it up to see what made it tick.  By building your own kit car from scratch you will know your car inside out, right down to the smallest bolt.

Another benefit is you will also be able to customize as you go, little by little, until you get it exactly the way you want it.  This way can be easier on the budget too, as you can work as you have the money instead of an outright, one-time price, such as when you buy a ready made vehicle.

Perhaps an overlooked benefit is the opportunity this can present for a quality family hobby.  Not only will you be spending time together, you will have something practical to show for that time, as well.

Mechanical ability is a must.   There is a great deal more to building a kit car than there is to gluing the model cars together we all used to enjoy as kids.  Adjustments will have to be made along the way.  There will be no substitute for knowledge of rear-axles, transmissions, engines, not to mention body work.
