Gorgeous curves, sexy sounds, energy extraordinaire. Am I talking about the latest Hollywood heartthrob? No. I’m describing what brings many to their knees…the sports car. Why the fascination? Simply speaking, it’s the sleek lines and the sound of thunder coming from exhaust pipes and engines that deliver power no station wagon ever could. The history of the sports car goes back to early automobile days, when the main concern was getting where one wanted faster than a horse could trot.
Those early carriages on wheels worked fine…for some, but for those who imagined faster, fancier, and more power, only the sports car would do.
History shows the birth of sports cars began abroad, and after World War Two soldiers who had laid their eyes on some of these beauties would never be content until U.S. soil saw them imported.
What is the history of sports cars? Where did they come from? It’s impossible to cover all the models.
However, 1921 saw England’s Triumph Cycle Company expand from bicycles, to motor cycles, to the now popular sports car. In 1935, Jaguar was born in England, followed by Austria’s Porsche in 1948. The first Lamborghini was born in Italy in March, 1964. Most models have since been named after bulls, as Mr. Lamborghini’s astrology sign was Taurus the Bull. And who can ignore America’s own Corvette rolling off the assembly line in 1953?
Many, especially family men consider sports cars, no matter how rich their history to be impractical, what with their two seats, low roofs and generally high prices. Still, when one is spotted cruising past most heads turn. It’s hard not to appreciate their beauty. And who in their right mind would refuse owning one if at all possible?
As long as people drive, the sports car will always be here. So the next time you see one of these beauties stop and listen. I bet you hear at least one whistle of approval, if not an outright gasp of delight. Maybe it will be from you. |
